#Tryanuary beer tasting at Chester Beer & Wine

In the spirit of #Tryanuary (of which we are a local champion for) we hosted a Beer and Food pairing at Chester Beer and Wine to check out some insane beers with some other bonkers beer lovers. Here’s what we had:

  1. The Mobberley Brewhouse / Salopian – Juice Stream 5.6% – £4.15

About the beer: A hop-forward new England IPA with whole oranges, orange juice and orange extract. Dry hopped with Citra and Mosaic hops.

About the brewery: Cheshire countryside based brewery who mainly produce cask beer. They’re growing fast, and last year they installed a brand new, purpose built brew kit. Salopian on the other hand are an old dog of outrageous beers, founded in 94 and based in Shrewsbury a purpose built 50 barrel plant and a taproom.

  1. Eyes Brewing – Hefeweizen 5.2% – £2.75

About the beer: Brewed with a single variety of British hops and traditional German malts.

About the brewery: EYES Brewing says they’re the UK’s first and only wheat brewery and quite possibly the first wheat-focused brewery to open anywhere in the World since the mid 20th century.

  1. Northern Monk Brew Co – Patrons Project Vague 6% – £5.40

About the beer: A single hop lager with punchy tropical notes stacked atop a clean and crisp malt base.

About the brewery: Leeds based Northern Monk is committed to creating the highest quality beers combining the best of traditional monastic brewing values with a progressive approach to ingredients and techniques.

  1. Loka Polly Brewery – Galaxy Mosaic IPA 6.5% – £3.50

About the beer: Hazy and unrefined hop bomb, aromas and flavours of passion fruit and citrus.

About the brewery: A brand new Mold-based brewery, nominated for an award in Chester Beer Awards too!

  1. Brew York – When Passion Turns Sour 3.8% – £3.00

About the beer: A zingy passion fruit and raspberry Berliner Weisse; a sour beer.

About the brewery: Located within York’s historic city walls, Brew York brewed their first beer in 2016, and went on to win many awards.

  1. Two Tribes Brewing – Island Records Jamaican Porter 6.2% – £2.95

About the beer: Rich, dark chocolate with minimal roastiness with a lingering spicy rum finish.

About the brewery: Based in Sussex, Two Tribes are brewing a range of beers, available in key keg and can, and often in collaboration with others. Started Brewing in 2015.

  1. Abbeydale Brewery – Salvation #5 Coffee & Doughnuts 5.8% – £2.85

About the beer: Coffee from Sheffield-based Roastology, and actual real doughnuts from neighbouring Forge Bakehouse. Bitter notes but smooth.

About the brewery: Brewing since 1996, these guys make over 800 casks per week. They’re from Sheffield, based in the heart of Sheffield Antiques Quarter.


Some right belters, these, but the one chosen as the beer of the night was…
